> A free random name generator that draws from a curated set of first names and surnames, each with its origin and meaning, so a random pick still comes with a story.

## A Random Name Generator That Shows What Each Name Means

Pick a name type, a style, and an origin, then press the button. Every result comes with its language of origin and a short meaning, so a random draw can still lead somewhere.

## Draw a random name

Choose first and last name, first name only, or last name only. Narrow by style and origin, or leave everything on Any and see what comes out.

## What happens when you press the button

There is no hidden formula. The tool filters a curated list, shuffles it, and shows you the first few.

### A real shuffle, not a template

Names are drawn with a standard shuffle, so no name appears twice in the same batch. Full names pair a first name with a surname, and when you choose an origin, both halves come from that language family.

### Every name carries its source

Each result shows the language it comes from and a short note on its meaning, such as Old Norse for Astrid or Hebrew for Hannah. Where the meaning shifts with spelling, as in Japanese, the note says so.

### Filters that narrow the set

Style limits first names to feminine, masculine, or gender-neutral. Origin limits both halves to one tradition. If a filter leaves very few names, the tool shows all of them and tells you why.

*Where the idea comes from*

## Random is only the starting point

Most random name generators stop at a string of letters. We built this one the way we build baby name shortlists: every name has a documented root, and the result is meant to be said aloud. A name can be drawn by chance and still be chosen on purpose. Keep the ones that make you pause, read them twice, and let the rest go.

## Four ways to use the results

1. **Start wide** — Leave style and origin on Any and press the button a few times. Notice which names make you stop. Your pattern, whether short, soft, or old, tells you what to filter next.
2. **Narrow by origin** — If you keep landing on names from one language, set the origin to match. The Scandinavian set leans on Old Norse roots, the Celtic set on Irish, Scottish and Welsh names.
3. **Keep and compare** — Press Keep on every name you like. The list builds below the results, so you can keep drawing without losing anything. Copy it when you are done.
4. **Say it out loud** — Read each kept name aloud with your surname or your character's family name. If it still sounds right the second time, it is a real candidate.

## Common questions

### Is this random name generator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account, and has no limit on how many times you press the button.

### Where do the meanings come from?

Each first name and surname in the set carries a short origin note based on its widely documented source language: Old Norse, Hebrew, Latin, Greek, Gaelic, Japanese, Arabic, or English. Where a meaning depends on the writing system, as with Japanese kanji, the note says so instead of picking one reading.

### Are the names really random?

The draw is random, the pool is not. The tool picks from a curated set of about 150 first names and 40 surnames, so you will never get a string of nonsense syllables. The trade-off is that a filter such as Scandinavian and gender-neutral may have only a handful of names to show.

### Why did I get fewer names than I asked for?

Some filter combinations are small. If a filter holds only eight names, the generator shows all eight and tells you so, rather than repeating names or inventing new ones.

### Can I use the results for a baby, a character, or a username?

For all three. A first name with a documented meaning suits a baby name shortlist, a novel, a game character, or a handle. For a real baby, treat the result as a starting point and check how the name sounds with your surname and how it is spelled in your country.

### What does the Keep button do?

It adds the name to a short list below the results, so you can keep generating without losing the ones you liked. The Copy button then puts the whole list on your clipboard. Nothing is saved after you close the page.

### Does the tool store or send what I choose?

No. The names, filters, and the list you keep stay on your device. The only thing the page records is an anonymous count that someone used the tool.

### Why are Japanese surnames shown after the first name?

For simplicity, every result follows the Western order of first name, then surname. In Japan the family name normally comes first, so read Hana Tanaka as Tanaka Hana in Japanese usage.

## Names drawn by chance, names chosen with care

bundleofjoy builds baby name shortlists from real etymological roots, with a phonetic test and a list that you and your partner can actually agree on. Explore it when you are ready to go from random to chosen.
